Application to Demining

Recently there has been an increasing interest in the international community to develop new techniques for detection of buried land mines. The reason for this is as follows. The number of buried land mines is estimated to be more than 100 millions worldwide and this number increases every day.

At the same time the prevealing methods for mine detection are essentially the same as those used during the second world war and consist of application of metallic detectors and manual inspection of the soil. The former method cannot be used to detect the new type of mines made of plastic and the latter is very time consuming.

A GPR, however, is capable of detecting both plastic and metal mines and the survey time is much faster than that of the manual inspection. For those reasons GPR constitutes a promising technique for mine detection. The GPR research team is a member of the Nordic Demining Research Forum (NDRF) .
