RFesonant Water-Based Particles for Sensor Applications
Spherical water particles support the excitation of electric and magnetic dipole resonances which are highly affected by the surrounding environment. This project investigates the potential of water particles for microwave sensing applications. A water sphere with well-defined resonance is coated with a functionalized layer of varying thickness and refractive index; it could be e.g., a solution containing specific concentration of ethanol that is to be sensed. The resonances in e.g., scattering cross section spectra will be monitored for any characteristics that differ from those identified for the un-functionalized particles, thereby enabling effective sensing schemes. The project is analytical and is addressed through the use of spherical vector wave expansions and subsequent examinations of typical scattering properties of the investigated particles. The project falls within our recently started research activity in the field of water-based metamaterials and metasurfaces in collaboration with DTU Photonics.
