Design of integrated circuits approaching terahertz frequencies

By Lei Yan

For a few years there have been very intense development efforts worldwide on imaging for security applications. The market for mm/sub-mm wave components and modules will thus probably grow significantly. Furthermore, it is expected that mm/sub-mm wave imaging will increasingly be developed for space and military applications.

The objective is to design and characterize MMIC circuits for the frequencies starting at E-band and up to 600 GHz with improved performance in terms of efficiency, phase-noise and power. A second objective is to develop analysis techniques to determine the RF performance including phase-noise using modified analysis tools.

The project results will be MMIC components for receiver and transmitter applications in millimeter-wave bands and at least one MMIC operating beyond 300 GHz.
